Simple Tips for a Healthier New Year

Our very own mom2mom Kristy Cooklin shares great tips for the New Year. Thanks Kristy!

By Kristy Cooklin

Nutrition

  • Drink a lot of water ~ half your body weight in ounces is a great place to start
  • Focus on clean eating (lean meats/non-animal protein, complex carbs & healthy fats) and limit processed foods
  • Eat small meals throughout the day, eating every 3-4 hours
  • Prepare your meals ahead of time
  • Be creative ~ most meals or desserts can be made in a healthier way

Exercise

  • Determine your fitness goals and pick a program that you enjoy
  • Find a workout buddy or someone you can be accountable to
  • Take before/after photos to see results ~ let your clothes and what you see in the mirror determine how you feel about your progress, the scale is not always good indicator of progress being made

At Home Workout

  • 60 sec Bodyweight squats
  • 60 sec High Knees
  • 60 sec Pushups
  • 60 sec Mountain Climbers
  • 60 sec Burpees

Get an App on your phone or set a timer. Complete 2-5 rounds with little or no rest
Also check out Stuft Mama, she is a mother of twin boys, has great workouts you can do at home and recipes for you and the kiddos.

Gym Workout

  • 10-12 reps Leg Press x3
  • 10-12 reps Bench Press x3
  • 10-12 reps Seated cable Rows x3
  • 10-12 reps Shoulder Press x3

Make-Ahead Breakfast Ideas for Christmas Morning

If you have a bit of the Type-A bug like me, you may have mentally prepared for your family's Christmas morning breakfast this past Summer. Your pantry may even already have all the needed items to make your dream spread (my pantry still needs to be filled, but *hoping* to get that checked off soon ;)

However, in the midst of a tremendously busy season, you may have yet to even think about Christmas morning breakfast... until now! :-) We got some tried-and-true family staples, one sweet, one savory. And the best part? You make these items the night before! Christmas morning is left for presents, the reading of Christmas story, and cherishing those precious moments with your little tots. Do you have a yummy Christmas morning tradition? Please post your recipe in the comment section!

Sticky Puddin' Buns
My mom used to make this for special occasions. Found her recipe for it in her tin, grey box, cutout from an old Arizona Republic article. It is tried and true and delicious! -- Jaime Tischler

Non stick vegi spray
1/2 cup chopped pecans
3-ounce package butterscotch pudding (not instant)
1 stick butter or margin
1/2 cup brown sugar

Spray bundt pan with non-stick vegtable oil. Cover the bottom with pecans. Place the frozen rolls on the top of the pecans. Sprinkle with pudding. Melt the butter and stir in brown sugar. Mix well, then pour all over the top of the frozen rolls. Cover top with waxed paper and let stand overnight.

Next morning, peel the paper carefully and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minuets. Carefully invert onto serving platter.

Makes 8 servings.

Eggs and Ham
Having holiday guests stay over? This one is perfect! Serves 20!

3 dozen eggs, add 1/2 - 1/3 of the milk
2 cans mushroom soup
1 of mushrooms
1 cup milk
1/2 cup cooking sherry
1/2 lb sharp cheese
1 stick butter
1 1/2 lbs shaved ham

Scramble eggs with butter until barely congealed. Sprink;e ham in greased casserole pan. Put eggs on top. Mix rest of ingredients--heat and pour over eggs. Cover with plastic and refrigerate until ready to use. Bake at 350 for 30 min.

December Meeting Recap

Can it be? Did we really just have our December meeting? It sure got me in the Christmas crafting spirit! Kristin Self shared some great Pinterest gift and craft ideas. Easy to make, beautiful to give.

Cheryl also spoke on Christmas traditions and as a group we all shared some of our favorites. Here are a few fun traditions from the group:
-Collect Christmas books thru out the year, and wrap up 24 Christmas book, and unwrap one each day of December
-Make cupcakes/birthday cake for Jesus and light candle on Christmas morning
-Wear PJs all Christmas day
-Leave cookies and milk out for Santa--don't forget to take a bite! And drain the milk! Kiddos remember ;-)
-Spread gift opening thru-out Christmas day... open just one gift at a time, take a break to do other things and come back to open another gift.

Before we dug into Kristin's fun craft, Cheryl also left us with some encouraging words and a question to ponder... "Do your traditions trump Jesus?" If any one of your traditions had to stop, what would your reaction be? Truly, a good thing to rest on as we head into some busy weeks before Christmas.

Tried and true ideas from our mom2mom members:

Liz Garrett:
Last year, we bought star shaped candy dishes from dollartree.com (shipped to store for free!) and put an assortment of Christmas candy inside, wrapped in snowflake cellophane, tied with a Christmas ribbon and delivered to all the nursery workers in Macy's classroom & to the neighbors. I made monogram ornaments for friends & bible study leaders.

Jaime Tischler:
For family members, I was inspired by the Pinterest craze of yarn wreaths :-) Found all the supplies at Hobby Lobby, including reusable cardboard boxes, with pretty designs, great for storage of the wreaths. Found mini picture frames and did a simple chevron design and each family monogram. For friends, found the mini picture frame ornaments at Hobby Lobby and made them personalized monograms as well.

Women's Christmas Dinner Recap

Last Friday and Saturday was the 2012 Women’s Christmas Dinner.  The mood was excited and elegant.  Everyone was dressed to perfection and the centerpieces were more lovely and creative than you could imagine.  Attendees were treated to delectable appetizers including sparkling apple cider, meatballs, a
nd chicken tortilla roll-ups.  Dinner included chicken cordon blue, cheesy potatoes, dinner rolls, and green beans.  For dessert, a delicious cranberry apple crisp with fresh whipped cream completed the meal.  The program included a soloist  performing several Christmas carols and a speaker who brought to life the theme, Celebrate Jesus, It’s True.

The theme hit very close to home for this new mother of two. A baby changes everything.  So innocent and so sweet.  Once a newborn comes into your world, life as you know it changes forever in an instant.  Before long, you cannot even remember what life was like with your child(ren). With Christ, our lives should be the same.  When I envision my life before him, I can’t even remember how I made it through the day.  But God sent his son to earth, even if you were the only one, He still would have sent his son to save you.  With Christ as the center, my life is completely different and more meaningful than it ever could have been before Jesus. This Christmas, remember to celebrate the child in the manger, the baby who changed the course of eternity for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who hostesses a table, participated in the skits, assembled the appetizers, and those who attended.
